I have a 2 year old male long haired dachshund and I've never used a whistle around him until I got this. As soon as I took it out of the box and used it he raised his head and looked at me . While I haven't tried to work with him much with it , he does come to me when I blow the whistle. I could see this being very handy for someone with a dog that likes to run off or bark a lot but as for my dog he doesn't really need it. He rarely ever barks and always wants to stay by my side so when he does go outside it is to potty and then right back in the door he goes. The whistle is made very good , it is slightly heavy but not so much that it would hurt to wear it on a necklace. You can also keep it on your keys . There is a part that screws on and off and that is used to adjust the pitch of the whistle . All in all I would say if your dog barks a lot or runs away then you want this whistle.
